Oracle’s first Quarterly Critical Patch Update (CPU) of 2018 provided fixes for 237 vulnerabilities across its product lines, including patches for 21 security holes in the Java Platform Standard edition (Java SE), 18 of which are remotely exploitable without authentication.

The latest CPU provides the fewest fixes for Oracle’s products since last April — except for Java SE, for which the company provided 22 fixes last quarter. The consistent number of patches, quarter to quarter, is a reminder that people must keep up with Java security, said John Matthew Holt, CTO of security firm Waratek, because the vulnerabilities are not going away any time soon.

Holt also pointed out that 28.5 percent of the vulnerabilities patched for the Java platform in this CPU address unsafe deserialization. Serialization is the process of converting an object into a stream of bytes for transport and storage. Deserialization reverses the process when the data is received.

“Oracle began fixing the first of the unsafe deserialization vulnerabilities discovered in the Java Platform last January,” Holt noted. “People were hoping that there would be one or two in isolation. But there has been a significant footprint of unsafe deserialization in every CPU since. It shows how challenging it is to deal with this vulnerability type in the core Java platform.”

Waratek, a Dublin-based app security tools provider with a special focus on Java, discovered two of the unsafe deserialization flaws patched with this CPU. “Waratek researched the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) codebase and has identified two new unbounded memory allocation vulnerabilities in two JRE subcomponents that may be remotely exploitable without authentication,” the stated in an advisory released Jan. 18.

An unsafe deserialization flaw was discovered last year in Apache Struts web app framework, which allowed attackers to seize control of any server running REST apps built with Struts. The Apache Software Foundation released a patch in September. A month later, an unsafe deserialization flaw was found in RubyGems, the maintainers of which issued a patch.

“We should all remember that the same unsafe deserialization problem is not only linked to the Java Platform,” Holt said, “but also the major frameworks and software components that are going to be built from Java.”

Oracle’s latest CPU includes patches for the Meltdown (CVE-2017-5754) and Spectre (CVE-2017-5753 and CVE-2017-5715) processor vulnerabilities that were disclosed on Jan. 3.

“This CPU is released into an environment where virtually every enterprise on the planet that is working to deploy the patches released for the Spectre and Meltdown chip vulnerabilities on top of the routine patches that must be routinely applied,” said Waratek EVP James Lee in a statement. “Companies that do business in the European Union are also coming to realization that a breach is not their only risk of incurring a large fine under the pending GDPR security rules – so is a failure to patch.”

“I think it’s also important to recognized that Oracle and the community’s investment in Java means that problems and vulnerabilities are found and fixed at a faster rate than many of the other software development languages,” Hole said. “The apparent proliferation of these vulnerabilities is evidence of a good quality security program being applied to the platform to find them and try to fix them.”

Each Oracle Quarterly CPU is a set of patches for multiple vulnerabilities put together since the previous update. They do not include the security advisories from previous updates; those are available on the Oracle Technology Network. However, most CPUs are cumulative, Oracle has said, which means the application of this CPU should resolve new vulnerabilities and previously-reported security issues.

Oracle’s CPUs are issued on a quarterly schedule announced at the beginning of the year. The purpose of that schedule is to provide users of Oracle products with a level of predictability that will foster regular maintenance activity, the company has said. The next four dates are:

  • 17 April 2018
  • 17 July 2018
  • 16 October 2018
  • 15 January 2019

Scram Software has announced that ScramFS – an internationally, peer-reviewed encryption system, for safeguarding cloud data – is now available globally to small and medium enterprises (SMEs), government and not-for-profit organizations.

This will be enabling fast and easy encryption of sensitive data to reduce breaches and assist in ensuring legal, HIPPA and GDPR compliance.

Until now, the options for encrypting data at rest have been limited and complex for organizations leaving them vulnerable and at risk. ScramFS simplifies the task of safeguarding data through transparent and automatic encryption – while delivering enterprise level security that is easy to deploy for system administrators, software developers and general users alike.

Researched, developed and peer-reviewed over three years by a team of security experts including Dr. Ron Steinfeld, a leader in post-quantum cryptography (Monash University, Australia), and Dr. Toby Murray, a leader in software security (The University of Melbourne, Australia), ScramFS provides fully transparent client-side data encryption to help organizations bolster their cyber defences and level of GDPR compliance. Specifically, ScramFS enables organizations to implement encryption and pseudonymisation security protections (Article 32) by design and default (Article 25), while also mitigating the obligations of reporting data breaches to data subjects (Article 34).

“It is disappointing that so many businesses are still either unaware or not yet prepared for GDPR given the serious potential consequences of non-compliance,” said George Crump, founder and lead analyst, Storage Switzerland. “My advice for any business firm, regardless of size or where they are based, is to become well educated on the impending GDPR and to make the investments and take the necessary steps to ensure compliance.  Exploring solutions such as Scram Software’s ScramFS is a good place to start.”

ScramFS is also designed to be long-term secure, meaning: most of today’s cryptosystems are expected to be broken by quantum computers within 15 years. But ScramFS uses only quantum-resistant techniques, so what users encrypt today will be secure for years and decades to come.

Cryptography has long had a reputation for being notoriously difficult or troublesome to implement, yet statistics show that security improves when IT professionals have quality tools and documentation showing them exactly how to perform specific tasks.

With this in mind, Scram Software has created an ‘encryption cookbook’ for ScramFS, enabling system administrators and DevOps engineers to follow ‘recipes’ for protecting many types of data, from encrypting a WordPress website backup, for example, to the encryption of a MySQL or Microsoft SQL Server backup.

ScramFS also features a simple Application Programming Interface (API) that allows software developers to add encryption into their applications, delivering secure systems by design and default by encrypting data early, thereby mitigating the possible effects of future breaches or lapses in security.

“Unfortunately, the world is experiencing an epidemic of data breaches. And, the problem seems to only be getting worse – pointing to some serious problems with IT security,” said Linus Chang, CEO and founder, Scram Software.

“For SMEs and non-profit organizations that are often struggling with limited IT staff and budget, these challenges are continuously exacerbated by ever increasing stores of data that must be protected, spread across various devices and geographies.  Add to that, the pressures from increasingly stringent legal regulations, HIPAA compliance and the impending GDPR.

“ScramFS delivers an encryption toolkit designed to counteract these problems and dramatically improve information security, by empowering system administrators and software developers to encrypt sensitive data quickly and easily, thus making data files unintelligible to hackers and other unauthorized persons. With GDPR compliance becoming enforceable in just 100 days’ time, our ScramFS encryption cookbook is a quick and easy reference that helps organizations to secure their data in a hurry and with minimal effort.”

HR tech news roundup: Employee engagement software vendor Limeade expands platform and releases inclusion module for large enterprises seeking more diverse workforces.
Employee engagement software vendor Limeade has released new software modules to help large enterprises diversify their workforces and better track engagement and communicate with workers.

Inclusion+ is a set of employee engagement software tools and content that measures workplace inclusion, and offers practical recommendations to employers, managers and organizational leaders to help improve employee experience, according to a product release.

Inclusion is a sense of connection employees feel at work, and includes feeling valued, respected, safe and connected, Laura Hamill, chief people officer and managing director of the Limeade Institute, said in the release. Workplace diversity is also part of inclusion.

To address employee engagement and other workplace issues, the Inclusion+ platform uses interactive quiz and survey technology to provide the following capabilities:

Measurement. The software uses pulse surveys several times a year to find out if employees feel comfortable voicing opinions, like they belong in the organization, have access to a sponsor, are valued at work and that a variety of backgrounds are represented at work.
Insights. With a real-time dashboard showing inclusion survey results, employers can filter and understand results and trends and make plans for change.
Action. The dashboard provides a series of recommendations for employer, manager and leader activities that are integrated with the Limeade well-being and engagement system.
Communications. Tools and templates for corporate wellness and survey program launches and follow-up emails to inform employees of the importance of an inclusive workplace and how to participate.
Limeade also expanded its employee engagement software with Limeade Engagement+, a measurement and engagement engine to drive real-time improvement across organizations, according to a release.

“We approach employee engagement through the lens of well-being. We know when companies invest in the well-being of their people, their people are more engaged,” Hamill said in a release. “Today employees are struggling. They’re disengaged, depressed and disconnected from purpose. Or they’re stressed out, self-medicating and burning out. This is becoming a workplace epidemic that companies are scrambling to address.”

If you manage a database server, you are probably always in search of a tool to make that process a bit easier. If your database of choice is MySQL, you have a number of options. You can always secure shell into that server and manage the databases from the command line. You can also install a tool like phpMyAdmin or adminer to take care of everything via a web-based interface. But what if you’d prefer to use a desktop client? Where do you turn? One possible option is DBeaver.

DBeaver is a free, universal SQL client that can connect to numerous types of databases—one of which is MySQL. I want to show you how to install and use DBeaver to connect to your remote MySQL server. DBeaver is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. I’ll be demonstrating on a Ubuntu 17.10 desktop connecting to a Ubuntu Server 16.04.

Installing DBeaver
The installation of DBeaver is fairly straightforward, with one hitch. Download the necessary .deb file from the downloads page and save it to your ~/Downloads directory. Open up a terminal window and change into that directory with the command cd ~/Downloads. Install the downloaded file with the command:

sudo dpkg -i dbeaver*.deb
That installation will error out, due to dependency issues. To resolve this, issue the command:

sudo apt install -f
Once the above command completes, everything will be in place to run DBeaver. Open up your desktop menu and search for the DBeaver software. Click on that entry to run the application.

Connecting DBeaver to your server
The first thing you must do is have your MySQL configured to allow remote connections. I’ve already covered this process in my article “How to set up MySQL for remote access on Ubuntu Server 16.04.” Make sure you have that working before continuing on. Otherwise the connection will fail.
A good tool to empower your MySQL database administration
And that’s all there is to connecting DBeaver to a remote MySQL database. If you’ve been looking for a powerful tool to make your MySQL administration a bit easier DBeaver goes a very long way to making that happen. Give this tool a try and see if it doesn’t become your go-to database admin app.

Everyone is happy Nokia uses Android on its smartphones now HMD Global is in control, and the software with Nokia’s few tweaks is generally very good. A phone leaked as the Nokia 7 Plus, however, may go a step beyond and offer Google’s unmolested version of the operating system: Android One. Here’s everything we think we know about the Nokia 7 Plus.

Design
Nokia’s most recent phones have been minimalist, good-looking, and well-built. How will the Nokia 7 Plus compare? It’s going to stand out a little, if leaked images are accurate. Two versions of the Nokia 7 Plus were posted on Twitter by mobile leaker Evan Blass, showing two phones, one in black and the other in white, each with bright flashes of color highlighting the camera lenses, the buttons on the side, and fingerprint sensor.

We like the look already, and it’s matched with an uncluttered style and on the front, an attractive screen that appears to have an 18:9 aspect ratio, and curved corners. On the back are two vertically stacked camera lenses with Zeiss branding, and a large flash unit alongside them. Underneath is a fingerprint sensor. Look closely and you’ll spot a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top of the phone.

Software
The Nokia 7 Plus, or at least one version of it, will likely use Android One. This is Google’s stripped down version of Android generally used on low-cost, low-power smartphones. We’ve seen various midrange phones with Android One recently, including the HTC U11 Life, the Motorola Moto X4, and the Xiaomi Mi A1. All are very good, and we expect great things from the Nokia 7 Plus.

What Android One’s presence means is frequent and timely software updates, very limited bloatware, a smooth user experience, and an uncluttered user interface. It’s good news. Whether the Nokia 7 Plus will solely be available as an Android One phone, or spun off into a version with Nokia’s software for alternate markets, isn’t known.

Specification
If the Nokia 7 Plus runs Android One, does this mean it’s a basic phone? No, but it’s not a flagship device either. A leak showing the Nokia 7 Plus’s specification came from China in early February, and claimed the phone will have a Snapdragon 660 processor and 4GB of RAM, with 64GB storage space and a MicroSD card slot. It also listed the software as simply Android 8.0 Oreo.

The dual-lens rear cameras apparently have 12 megapixels and 13 megapixels, while the front camera may have 16 megapixels. The screen is set to be large at 6 inches, and have an 18:9 aspect ratio with small bezels. The battery capacity isn’t mentioned, but the leak does say it’ll be charged with a USB Type-C cable and quick-charge technology.

Release and availability
When will the Nokia 7 Plus launch? It’s possible the phone is one of Nokia’s announcements for Mobile World Congress, which takes place at the end of February. A long list of phones are rumored from Nokia already, and the Nokia 7 Plus is another to add to it.

If you’re building a new website for your blog or a small business, you have your work cut out for you. While it’s easier than ever to get started designing a great website on a budget, there are many instances when you need the helping hand of someone more experienced. If you don’t have a background in web development, there still might be much you can do alone. That being said, there are many cases when it’s simply best to consult a web developer for your project. Read on to know when you need a web developer for your project.

What is a web developer?
There are many types of web developers. Generally, there are three main types including back-end developers, front-end developers, and web designers. They all serve different functions and you might realize your project is in need of one more than the others. Back-end developers basically are programmers and can build more complex web applications. They can also handle things like data management and security features. If your project is in need of a custom application or complex security system, you’ll need the assistance of a skilled back-end developer.

A front-end developer helps design the user experience. They’re the ones creating the part of a website or project that is visible to users, and front-end development is more important now than ever before. With users accessing websites through both computers and smart devices, your project needs to be accessible no matter the screen size. A front-end design keeps things consistent and accessible across devices and operating systems.

Finally, a web designer is more skilled in the aesthetics of a website. While they might not have as much experience in coding or development, they have the skills to create compelling graphics and combine design elements. Often web designers work in conjunction with developers to create an overall concept for the website or project.
When should you seek a web developer?
There are a few instances when you should always seek the help of a web developer, but ultimately if you have any questions you should at least consult with a skilled developer before beginning a new project. Web developers can ensure your project runs smoothly and you can avoid unwanted hiccups along the way. Here’s when you need a web developer:

You need to create a new website from the ground up.

If you are starting a new project from scratch, you need extra help. While basic websites can be created on your own with templates and page builders, more custom projects will rely on the skill of a web developer. Both a front-end and back-end developer will likely be needed if you have a complex project, and this is a situation where it might make sense to hire several developers as a team. Companies like The Web Shop offer everything you need to get your website up and running with a team of designers and developers ready to help every step of the way.

You need a new website design.

If you’re updating a website with a fresh design, you likely need a web designer. If you have complex changes in mind, a front-end developer might even be worth consulting since sometimes the changes are deeper than simply visual changes. A web designer can manage your revamp project, ensuring the entire thing runs smoothly from start to finish. You want to make sure you get a result you love!

Do you need e-commerce features or content management?

Finally, if your project involves complex features like e-commerce tools or content management systems, you need a back-end developer. When managing a large system, you often require customizations that are difficult to learn on your own. You don’t want to risk your entire website project when developing back-end applications, so hire an expert who will get the job done right the first time.

Web developers can be a great help!
You shouldn’t be afraid to consult the help of a web developer if you have a big project. Even experienced website builders require the help of web developers from time to time as projects grow and change. Do your research to ensure you have the best help for your project. Sometimes it really does take a team to make a project come to life!

The coding community at Colorado State University-Pueblo was treated to a unique event Thursday evening as the CodePen site and the campus library partnered to bring together like minds to discuss their coding passion.

CSU-Pueblo Web Developer Lallo Vigil organized the meetup, which was held in LARC 109. He expressed his excitement about CodePen supporting the campus as well as the potential for community growth.

“There’s not a lot of tech jobs in Pueblo right now, but the field is growing,” Vigil said, later explaining that the number of jobs will expand as time goes on.

There’s a great demand for people with coding experience, but not enough people to fill them at the moment, Vigil elaborated.

The site has had similar meetups throughout the world, with numerous in burgeoning tech cities in the United States such as Colorado Springs, Colorado and Dayton, Ohio.

The event itself featured food, drinks, and a variety of CodePen goodies for the attendees to take with them, including pens, coasters, stickers, pins, and shirts.

Though only attended by about a dozen students and Pueblo citizens, the event was thoroughly enjoyed and well-received.

Presented by Vigil and Instructional Technology Center Coordinator Adam Pocius, the meet-up opened with an explanation of what CodePen is and how it operates.

It works using HTML, CSS, and Javascript, which Vigil effectively broke down for the audience using an analogy.

“If you think of your website like a house, HTML is the structure, CSS is like the paint, and Javascript is the things that move in the house, like the garage door,” Vigil said.

The presenters looked at various “pens” on the site which are demonstrations of other people’s ideas and projects that were made using the site, including a visual take on a Chuck Norris quote and a recreation of the popular Marvel Studios logo.

Though primarily featured, CodePen wasn’t the sole focus of the night as Vigil and Pocius presented their department’s encompassing project for the last two years: the CSU-Pueblo website redesign.

Pocius showed off everything that went into the making of the as he walked through the three crucial phases the development team went through, titled Brains, Beauty, and Brawn.

After that, Pocius treated the crowd to an actual functioning version of the new site complete the latest features and advantages.

One of the things we focused on was responsive design, which Pocius explained as he showed how the site adapts to various size changes, a feature that will be very apparent to mobile device users.

The new site included a renewed focus on the students as well, which Pocius said was another goal of redesigning the site.

Following a trip through some of the crowd’s “pens,” which included a playable game of “Pong,” the event closed to applause.

Overall, those in attendance and organizers were pleased with the initial turnout and hope it grows as a whole.

“We want to host events like this more often here on campus,” Pocius said.

“There is a good amount of people in Pueblo who like things like this,” Vigil said, “but the goal with things like this, is to bring it more onto the campus.”

Both Pocius and Vigil were encouraged by the turnout, despite the smaller crowd, and hope that these meet-ups will help the campus coding community flourish in the future.
