When Chelsa Hughes first launched a lingerie line, she thought all sizes should fit a Victoria Secret model. Her largest line of lingerie is now available in her new Echo Park-Cantiq store. By including plus size and gender specific people in their audience, Hughes has taken a unique lead in the fashion world. Nordstrom recently added her lingerie line.
The new store on Sunset Boulevard and Echo Park Avenue is much larger and more visible than the previous store in Silver Lake.
Hair and skin care products, potted plants, and bar wear include hangers filled with colorful lingerie, lace, and mesh creations that use no padding or hangers, but strategically placed straps for support and shape.
Bras, panties, boy’s shorts, home wear and bodysuits are aimed at an inclusive audience in several ways. Sizes range from small to 5x and there are gender specific variations too – panties are created with more room in the front. In short, all body types and identities are welcome.
The origins of their design can be traced back to second hand shops in Spain. When she was younger, Hughes often accompanied her family on a visit to Spain, where she took time to scour the Segunda Mano vintage shops for fabrics.
Years later, Hughes was up late at night when she went to get all those little bits of cloth from the warehouse and she realized that the only thing she could do with them was one-off clothes – which she made herself.
She put the finished pieces on a mannequin. When her friends came to visit, she would ask if she could make a set for them. As new requests came in, Hughes began selling the lingerie through Etsy. She still remembers the day she received an order from a customer in Kentucky and then the UK and then Canada. Until that time, the only people who placed orders were their friends and family. After graduating from fashion school, Hughes spent some time as a designer in Indonesia.
